The 5 Best Isekai Anime with Dragons to Witness their Fury

Raise your hand if you don’t like dragons. And clearly, we see no hands raised, as we expected.

Let’s not kid ourselves, dragons are super cool, with their huge scales, gigantic tonnage, and ability to spit devastating jets of fire, ice, or other elements.

And since the isekai genre is becoming more and more popular in recent years, we decided to ride the wave and create for you the list of the best isekai anime with majestic dragons in their story.

Keep in mind that this list is made according to our personal experience and opinion.

5. Tsukimichi – Moonlit Fantasy

Tsukimichi is a recent isekai anime, released in 2021 based on a light novel with 12 episodes by far.

It follows the story of Makoto Misumi, a normal student who suddenly finds himself transported to a new world. Summoned by a goddess, he learns that his parents had made a pact to make him the hero of this world.

But Makoto is betrayed by the goddess who deems him aesthetically unqualified for the task.

But here begins his rise, and despite starting as an outcast in a foreign world, Makoto will soon develop strong powers with the help of another god, until he becomes a renowed hero.

Tsukimichi is an ordinary isekai, with no particular merit except a good and interesting worldbuilding.

And one of the highlights of the latter is the presence of many dragons, which hold great prominence and importance in the world in which the story is set.

4. GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There

Gate

GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There is a 2015 isekai, released in 24 episodes adapted from a light novel written by Takumi Ianai.

It’s super interesting to report that the author based the characters in the story on his fellow soldiers he actually met during his time in the military.

We are in a modern Tokyo, which one day is shocked by the opening of a mysterious portal from which all kinds of entities emerge, from knights to orcs, and even dragons.

As a countermeasure, Japan decides to send a group of elite soldiers led by Youji Itami to the other side of the portal.

GATE is a good isekai, great if you are looking for something different from the usual and that starts from a fresh premise.

The characters are well varied and the setting is good, with an interesting mix of real world and fantasy elements.

3. Mushoku Tensei

Mushoku Tensei

Mushoku Tensei is one of the most popular isekai of recent years, with an animated adaptation started in 2021 and released in multiple seasons. It’s also available on Hulu, so you can watch it without any issues if you’re subscribed to the service.

The main character is a 34-year-old man, depressed and defeated by life, who in an attempt to make sense of his existence saves a boy who was about to be run over, dying in his place.

But instead of dying for good, he will awaken in a fantasy world in the guise of a child named Rudeus, retaining all his old memories.

From here he will begin a new life of his own, with the possibility of living a new existence from scratch.

Mushoku Tensei is excellent in many ways. Its premise is classic of any isekai, but it is developed in an excellent way, with excellent characters and action scenes.

Not to mention the excellent world-building that this anime can boast of, filled with many fantasy creatures, including dragons.

2. That Time I Got Reincarnated in a Slime

That time I got reincarnated as a slime

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is probably the most popular isekai in recent years, released as of 2018 in several seasons, spin-offs, and OVAs.

A 37-year-old man, depressed and dissatisfied with life, is killed one day by a robber on the run.

But instead of dying he finds himself reincarnated as a blind slime in a strange fantasy world under the name Rimuru Tempest.

But don’t be swayed by appearances, because he will be incredibly strong, routing every enemy that comes his way and soon gathering a long retinue of allies.

If you are looking for an isekai anime with an OP MC and some excellent action scenes, we probably have no better recommendations.

Dragons also are important figures in this anime worldbuilding, regarded as the strongest and most respectable beings in this world.

1. Sprited Away

Spirited Away

Spirited Away is one of Studio Ghibli’s indisputable masterpieces, that even received Oscar nominations and awards, and one of the best fantasy anime ever made.

And yes we know, it’s strange if you think about it, but Spirited Away is an isekai in its own right.

Chihiro is a little 10 years girl, who together with her parents is moving to a new town.

On the way, they will stop in front of a strange building in the middle of the woods, which the parents decide to explore in curiosity, leaving the little girl alone in the car.

Chihiro will decide to join them, scared of being alone, and from here a journey you can’t even imagine will begin where she’ll meet every type of creature, dragons included.

Spirited Away is an animation gem that you must watch if you haven’t already. It has a great storyline, spectacularly designed characters, and excellent animation and soundtrack.
