The Top 10 Scariest Horror Anime On Hulu [Recommended]

Hulu is a popular streaming platform and boasts a huge catalog of every form of entertainment possible, including anime too.

Even though the number is declining in recent times, there are some nice horror shows if you are already paying for it.

And that’s why we have conveniently gathered for you the best horror anime you can watch on Hulu, so you won’t get lost in the meanderings of the platform.

As always, this listicle is purely based on our opinions and knowledge.

10. High School of the Dead

High School of the Dead

In High School of the Dead, a mysterious deadly disease has spread throughout the world, with catastrophic repercussions for humanity, resulting in attacks caused by the living dead, called Them.

A group of high school students in Japan has banded together to escape the zombie onslaught, while also trying to figure out who or what is responsible for the ongoing apocalypse.

The manga blatantly references the corresponding horror film strand, not failing to pay homage to films such as Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later, as well as video games such as Resident Evil.

But don’t expect anything serious or even a masterpiece.

High School of the Dead was blatantly created to entertain without commitment with its exaggerated gore scenes and an inordinate amount of ecchi and fanservice.

9. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo ghoul

One of the most famous anime of recent years, which has been at the center of attention for a variety of reasons, mainly because of its fluctuating adaptation.

The story revolves around Ken Kaneki, an ordinary college student who lives in a town where strange and violent murders are happening.

According to the police investigation, these deaths are caused by Ghouls, mysterious and unknown creatures that feed on the bodies of their victims. No one has ever seen them even in passing.

Its uncertain and unfaithful adaptation causes more confusion than anything else.

So we recommend reading the manga, although the anime deserves to be watched for the good animation and soundtrack.

8. Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: Tou

Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: Tou

Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho is a horror-investigative anime divided into several series based on a videogame of the same name.

The story is set in Tokyo where some paranormal phenomena are occurring. During the night, people disappear only to suddenly reappear lifeless during the day.

The only thing that unites this chain of deaths is that once taken to the morgue to perform the autopsy, these bodies disappear.

A group of students decides to investigate these strange phenomena, but little do they know that a huge and frightening truth awaits them.

This anime has an excellent horror setting, but what will really give you the chills is the constant sense of tension and mystery you will have as the investigation continues.

In addition, the character design is very enjoyable, and the technical aspect while not excellent is beautiful to look at, with solid animations.

Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho is the best detective anime choice if you also want to watch some horror scenes on Hulu.

7. Corpse Princess

Corpse Princess

Corpse Princess is an anime directed by Gainax and feels., based on revenge and the relationship between life and death. It’s also what we can consider one of the best zombie anime in circulation right now.

The main character Makina Hoshimura turns into a Shikabane Hime (zombie) after she is brutally murdered by a secret organization.

This is possible thanks to the effort of the Kougun Cult, as they want her to kill other corpses, for this reason, they will grant her access to Heaven, as long as she kills 108 of them.

Corpse Princess is extremely action-packed and entertaining, although it doesn’t excel in anything.

Like many anime in this listicle, it’s just a decent show to watch if you like the horror/zombie genre since there is nothing revolutionary about this series.

Even though its setting and horror elements aren’t bad, this series has dark environments and lots of blood and gore. Don’t expect it to be scary, though.

6. The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland

The setup for this anime is as simple as it is frightening. Humans and Demons ended a long war by coming to an agreement named The Promise.

According to this agreement, humans and demons will not invade each other worlds but demons will have to be granted a steady supply of food in the form of human flesh.

The humans will be bred in these fake orphanages where a human Mother would make sure that the children would grow up and then be adopted, meaning they will be fed to high-ranking demons.

We are told this story from the point of view of 3 children who are living in one of these orphanages, the Grace Field House, and they will slowly unravel the chilling mystery of the place where they grew up in.

The first season of the anime, the one where the children have to break out of the orphanage after discovering the truth, is very disturbing and anxiety-provoking.

We will see a real escalation of tension until the final climax, in a whirlwind that will keep you glued from beginning to end. And that’s why we consider it as one of the best anime that get darker in the plot.

5. Claymore

Claymore

A 26-episode anime set in a dark medieval fantasy-themed world where the inhabitants are forced to fight the threat of monstrous creatures that feed on humans.

Fighting these creatures, called Yomi, are the Claymores, warriors with enormous power who can counter the terrible monsters with their swords.

The protagonist of the story is Claire, a low-level claymore who will increase her fighting power over time as she discovers the deceptions behind theYomi and the society in which she lives.

A very good dark fantasy setting mixed with a lot of action and excellent characters make this anime one of the must-watch if you like mature stories.

The dark fantasy setting of Claymore is charming and gloomy, perfect to represent a sad world infested by Yomi. The anime isn’t really at the same level as the original source, the manga.

That’s because it aired before the manga finished so the last 3 episodes aren’t canon, but this adaptation is still a great introduction anyway.

4. Shiki

Shiki

Shiki is an anime with pronounced horror scenes and atmosphere, with some nice splatter moments as well.

In a remote rural village in Japan, the lives of the inhabitants are suddenly disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious epidemic.

As Toshio, the village doctor tries to discover the causes of the disease, the number of deaths begins to increase and how these occur become strange.

Is this an epidemic or is the truth related to the world of the supernatural?

As already mentioned, this anime is marked by very gruesome and horror scenes, with intense splatter moments.

But rest assured that it is not one of those splatters so absurd that they almost make you want to laugh, achieving the opposite effect.

Shiki has one of those gruesome scenes that make the viewer feel uncomfortable. And that, of course, only goes to contribute to the already excellent horror atmosphere of the anime, in one of the best anime with a ghost town setting.

3. Blood-C

Blood-C

Blood-C is a good anime that goes for a good mix of action and horror, with some very dark, mood-setting environment.

The plot follows the adventures of Saya Kisaragi, who lives a split life being a regular schoolgirl during the day and a monster slayer equipped with a sword at night.

Her main target are terrifying blood-feeding vampire-like creatures called Elder Bairns, so this show is ideal if you like some gruesome action.

But beyond that, Saya is haunted by visions of her past of which she has no memory.

It has a good dark atmosphere with tons of tension and a nice rhythm if you want violence. While we don’t know if this show will be removed from Hulu, we still recommend it for the time being.

2. Parasyte

Parasyte

A 24-episode anime created by Madhouse studio from Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga of the same name, bringing it to the present day by debunking it from its vintage setting.

The work stars Shinichi Izumi, an ordinary student whose right hand is infested by a mysterious alien parasite interested in taking over his body.

Migi, a nickname given to the parasite, is just one of a race of parasites intent on taking over human bodies to conquer Earth.

The forced coexistence between the two leads them to clash with other malicious parasites in an ongoing struggle for their survival and that of humankind.

But what seems like an almost bizarre and comical situation will soon turn out to be chaotic and bloody as the two realize how violent and bloodthirsty the other parasites are.

A lot of action, badass moments, and excellent animation and soundtrack, all combined with a simple but highly effective plot, especially the protagonists with excellent characterization.

1. Hellsing Ultimate

Hellsing Ultimate

This is our top choice for Hulu horror anime because it’s a cult of the genre.

The name of the series comes from the homonym secret organization Hellsing, whose duty is to hide the existence of Vampires and to keep the population safe.

The main character Alucard works for Hellsing as a vampire exterminator, being himself a member of the vampire race.

Integra Hellsing, the current leader of the organization, is worried about a new wave of vampire attacks and the problem seems much bigger than she expected.

The mysterious group called Millenium is plotting to throw England into disarray, and maybe threaten even the entire world.

Hellsing Ultimate is an anime recognized by the masses as a small masterpiece. You can say it’s among the best vampire anime due to its complexity and its badass main character.

And this is certainly because of its excellent action, its gorgeous and recognizable settings, and an excess of gore but that works, totally contextualized and great.
