Isekai anime have explored every possible trope ever created, even the strangest. But what if the main character is not human? After all, why should humans be central in fantasy and fictional worlds?
And that is exactly why we have collected the best isekai without a human protagonist because they are fun and interesting.
This list, as always, is made based on our tastes and experience and is spoiler-free.
Table of Contents
11. How Not to Summon a Demon Lord

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord is an isekai anime with ecchi and comedy that has been quite successful in recent times.
Takuma Sakamoto is a frequent player of the MMORPG Cross Reverie, so strong that he is called the king of demons.
At one point he is transported, in the form of his demon avatar, to another world where 2 girls try to make him their slave through magic.
Too bad Takuma casts reflex magic at just the right moment, so it is now the 2 girls who become his slaves in the conquest of that new world.
10. Reincarnated as a Sword

Reincarnated as a Sword, a decidedly unique and out-of-the-box isekai was recently released in 2022. As the title suggests, the protagonist is incarnated as a sword.
Finding himself stuck in a vast plain populated by beasts, the protagonist in his new form begins to search for some worthy warrior who can wield it.
He ends up in the hands of a cat girl, and this is how their adventure begins.
Reincarnated as a Sword is an interesting isekai, and even if it doesn’t add anything new if we talk about settings, at least it has innovative protagonists and premises.
9. Skeleton Knight in Another World

Skeleton Knight in Another World consists of 12 episodes so far and is adapted from a light novel.
The protagonist of the story falls asleep while playing an online game and wakes up inside it in the guise of his character.
Still in shock, realizing that his equipment has halved and his skin has become that of a skull, he will begin his adventure.
The plot is rather simple, and unfortunately except for the strange appearance of the main character, it doesn’t consist of anything new.
The animations are on point but they don’t make this show worthier alone.
8. The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!

Comedy, ecchi and reverse isekai are the main themes of this light anime. We are talking about The Great Jahi Will Not Be Defeated.
Lord Jahy was a feared and respected demon in the demon world, only below the demon king.
Too bad that due to some circumstances she is now forced to work and take care of her home in the human world, and plus, she is broke.
An anime that begins as isekai, but ends up being a slice-of-life comedy. There are few characters, which is why they all end up being characterized, funny, and unique.
The episodes will seem to fly by in a constant state of lightness that will make you enjoy this all-around funny anime.
7. Arifureta – From Commonplace to World’s Strongest

Arifureta is a 2019 anime released in 13 enjoyable episodes.
A class of high school students is transported to a parallel world as a group of heroes who must save it from destruction.
All the students are found to possess excellent skills except Nagumo Hajime, who becomes a weak non-human crafter with super low statistics.
One day, while exploring a dungeon, Nagumo falls into a seemingly bottomless abyss. But when at the bottom he finds there a blonde vampire over 300 years old despite appearances imprisoned the tables will turn.
Arifureta begins as any isekai trivialism but takes a different and interesting turn from the start. We won’t see as usual a focus on fighting or a kingdom to save, but rather a lot of psychology and romance.
Recommended if you are looking for an isekai in a more serious and different key than usual and one of the best isekai anime with guns.
6. So I’m a Spider, So What?

Released in 2021, So I’m a Spider, So What? is an atypical but interesting series and one of the best isekai anime with experience levels.
In another world, the Hero and the Demon King confront each other, and the explosion they cause crosses worlds and destroys a classroom full of students, who will be reincarnated in that alternate world.
But much to her surprise, the protagonist of the story is reincarnated as a spider, quickly adapting to her new life.
Although the premise sounds interesting, this anime ends up being nothing particularly innovative.
The beginning is slow, so you must be patient to be treated with an interesting plot. The bad pacing is the biggest pet peeve of watching this anime, so we don’t recommend it to those who want fast action.
Still, it’s a good isekai and better than those we mentioned before.
5. In the Land of Leadale

In the Land of Leadale plays with your emotions and is a nice sentimental anime.
Kagami is a girl who, due to a sad accident, has half her body paralyzed and manages to live only on life support.
But as if that were not enough one day, an electrical failure stops her life support from working, causing her death.
But before that happens, her consciousness is revived in the online videogame Leadale. Upon her awakening, she finds herself in the game, 200 years in the future, in the guise of an elf.
In the Land of Leadale is mainly based on Kagami’s character and his new life, while not being heavy-handed and 100% sad and psychological.
The main theme will be the evolution of the main character as she gets a second chance in life.
4. Overlord

Overlord is an anime based on another light novel series written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by So-Bin in 2012.
A nice Isekai classic, it takes the basics of the genre and reworks them into a dark fantasy atmosphere all its own.
Although the initial premise is the same as much other anime in the genre, here the protagonist Momonga is not reincarnated into a weakling, but rather into what is considered the most powerful being in his world.
This will lead him to be in command of a powerless army with which he will slowly conquer everything conquerable, in a series of events that are never predictable or trivial.
The great virtue of Overlord is the rawness of the actions performed by Momonga and the real and tangible weight they have on the people of the world. And indeed we consider him as one of the best evil MCs you can find.
3. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

One of the most popular fantasy anime of recent times, animated in various series by Studio 8-Bit and based on Fuse’s light novel of the same name in one of the best isekai anime with a royal MC in our opinion.
Like much of isekai, here too we find a character who after his death is transported to a fantasy world. In this case, the protagonist is Satoru Mikami, a salaryman who dies stabbed after saving a colleague from a robber.
The special feature lies in the fact that he will be reincarnated as a blind slime. After befriending the dragon Veldra, he begins his adventure in the world, gathering around him a vast array of loyal followers.
The main character is non-human and this brings some freshness into the overall story. Rimuru, Satoru’s isekai alter ego, is extremely powerful and embodies the stereotype of the OP main character in isekai.
2. The Devil is a Part-Timer!

A highly acclaimed and award-winning work, The Devil is a Part-Timer! is another fantasy-style comedy released in 2013 and easily one of the most underrated isekai anime at the moment.
The demon lord Satan is only one step away from conquering the world he lives in when he is transported to the Tokyo we all know. To manage to survive, he ends up working part-time at a restaurant.
And to realize his new idea, which is to conquer Japan, he must first become a full-fledged employee and settle into society.
A light anime, almost a parody of the isekai genre. Making Satan himself an awkward, job-seeking individual like any teenager is undoubtedly a bold move.
If you want to watch an anime that goes to revolutionize the classic narrative patterns then this is one of the best recommendations, also because it’s one of the best isekai without ecchi.
1. Log Horizon

Log Horizon is the perfect blend between an MMORPG and a fantasy setting.
The plot of the series is set in the world of Elder’s Tale, the world’s most popular MMORPG played by thousands of players.
Unfortunately for the protagonists of the series, Shiro, Naotsugu, and Akatsuki, this fantasy world will become their prison as they mysteriously can’t get out.
To survive, the three will find the Log Horizon guild and make their way through the game world to try to solve the mystery that has trapped them.
But like any isekai that is based on MMORPG worlds, in-game characters have a game class. And it just so happens that the main character, Shiro, is a half-alv, one of the non-human classes among those available.
What sets this anime apart is the more mature vision than the classic Isekai anime. This show is ideal if you want to breathe MMORPG and management games, as economics and politics are the backbones of the story with some of the best genius MC you can find.
If you want realism and real-world strategy, then Log Horizon is most likely one of the best variations of fantasy anime you could ever wish for.
