The 11 Craziest Anime To Watch If You Loved Kill la Kill

Kill la Kill is an exceptional anime that deserves even greater success than it has already achieved.

This is certainly due to its well-developed characters, outstanding action scenes, and clever use of fan service.

Furthermore, Studio Trigger’s animation and soundtrack work is top-notch, making the series a standout in this aspect.

But enough with the praise, let’s explore the best anime like Kill la Kill that you can add to your watchlist to experience its fantastic qualities once again.

11. Medaka Box

Medaka Box

Medaka Box is an anime adaptation of a manga published in Shonen Jump that, compared to other titles in the same magazine, has gone somewhat unnoticed. But still, it shares many similarities with Kill La Kill.

The story revolves around Medaka Kurokami, the newly elected president of the student council at Hakoniwa Academy, who sets up a suggestion box to collect proposals and suggestions from students.

She’s joined by Zenkichi Hitoyoshi, Kouki Akune, and Mogana Kikaijima, and they soon find themselves facing the threat of the Flask Plan, a project created by the principal to create students with special powers.

The two series share some common elements, such as an academic setting with a strong hierarchy, action, and some good fan service, but they have distinctly different plots.

Nonetheless, Medaka Box is worth a try if you enjoyed Kill la Kill.

10. Brand New Animal

Brand New Animal

Brand New Animal may not share many similarities with Kill la Kill, apart from having a strong female lead.

The plot, setting, and vibes are quite different. However, we still recommend it because it is animated by Studio Trigger, and if you loved their outstanding animation in Kill la Kill, you will also enjoy it in Brand New Animal.

The story revolves around Michiru, a girl who mysteriously transforms into a human-like tanuki and seeks refuge in Anima City, a place where semi-humans reside.

There, she meets Shirou, a werewolf who teaches her about their lifestyle. However, their investigation into Michiru’s transformation leads to the discovery of mysterious secrets.

Overall, while the two series may have different storylines, we do not doubt that if you enjoyed the animation in Kill la Kill, you will also love Brand New Animal.

9. Soul Eater

Soul Eater

Soul Eater and Kill la Kill have both differences and similarities.

The story of Soul Eater takes place in the Shinigami World, where the main enemies are Kishin, dark humans who become more powerful by killing others.

The two main characters are Maka Albarn and her partner, Soul Eater, who can transform into a scythe to reap the souls of their enemies. They attend the Shinigami School along with their classmates to prepare for the threat posed by the Kishin.

The similarities between the two anime are quite evident, as they both have a similar setting in an academy with a badass principal and an excellent female protagonist.

However, the differences are also quite noticeable, as Soul Eater has a different plot and setting that revolves around fantasy elements.

Therefore, we recommend Soul Eater if you’re looking for a fantasy and supernatural twist on Kill la Kill!

8. Akame Ga Kill!

Akame ga Kill

Both Kill la Kill and Akame ga Kill! share high-level action scenes, outstanding fighting, and plenty of plot twists, but they also have some notable differences.

Akame ga Kill! is a darker and politically-driven story that follows a young boy named Tatsumi, who joins the Night Raid, a covert assassination branch of the Revolutionary Army fighting to overthrow the corrupted Prime Minister.

The story is full of mysteries and plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

On the other hand, as you already know, Kill la Kill is centered almost entirely on pure action and features a unique storyline that takes place in a high school setting.

But if you’re looking for breathtaking action, both of these anime are excellent choices.

7. One Punch Man

One Punch Man

Many of you will be turning their noses up at this recommendation, and indeed it’s quite daring. But wait to judge.

The story revolves around Saitama, a 25-year-old boy who decides to become a hobby hero and possesses the power to defeat any enemy with a single punch.

However, this power is also a curse, as it forces him into a boring life with no one to really challenge him.

Both anime have a lot of fast action, extremely fast pacing, and plenty of comic moments to balance it all out.

Not to mention that both anime have excellent and quirky characters, and shares the theme of heroism with different approaches.

The similarities are there, aren’t they?

6. Dead Leaves

Dead Leaves

Dead Leaves is a unique movie that is difficult to describe in words, and recommending it after Kill la Kill! might be a gamble. But let us get to the point.

The plot is as simple as it is effective: a group of protagonists with mysterious circumstances attempt a bank robbery but are caught and sent to prison. From there, they plan their escape and revolt.

While Dead Leaves and Kill la Kill have gigantic differences, they share some ideological similarities.

Both are fast-paced, action-packed, and sometimes deliberately vulgar anime that relies heavily on their excellent animation to captivate their audience.

If you are into extreme visual scenes, Dead Leaves is among the best productions ever made.

5. Flip Flappers

Flip Flappers

What can we say about Flip Flappers except that it deserves more success with its fantastic action scenes, incredibly fast-paced pacing, and irreverent and even vulgar elements at times?

Does it remind you of Kill la Kill?

The main character is Cocona, a quiet and judicious young girl attending middle school.

However, she makes the acquaintance of Papika, a peer with an explosive personality who invites Cocona to come along with her to a mysterious parallel dimension called Pure Illusion, where everything is possible.

But don’t worry, because the similarity between the two series is intentional.

Flip Flappers is, in fact, an anime that deliberately takes inspiration from Kill la Kill, FLCL, and also other anime on this list. Even the animations pay homage to those of Studio Trigger.

4. Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a recently released anime that has been a huge success since its debut. And again, we highly recommend this anime for its outstanding technical and animation departments helmed of course by Studio Trigger.

The story follows David Martinez, a student at Arasaka Academy in Night City, a futuristic metropolis. His goal is to fulfill his mother’s dream of reaching the top of the world’s leading security corporation.

However, after a devastating incident with a street gang, David implanted Sandevistan cyberware to gain superhuman speed and OP skills, to exact revenge on his enemies.

Witness his relentless struggle to survive within a perilous and corrupt system, as he refuses to back down from any challenge.

Although the setting and plot differ significantly from Kill la Kill, we are confident that Studio Trigger’s signature touch will make you fall in love with Cyberpunk Edgerunners just as much.

3. FLCL

FLCL

FLCL is an experimental and innovative anime that shares the fast-paced action, pacing, and exceptional animations of Kill la Kill.

The series is set in a small Japanese town where the young protagonist, Naota, lives. His older brother has left for America to play baseball, causing Naota to feel lonely and abandoned.

However, his loneliness is broken by his brother’s girlfriend, Mamimi, who develops a strange attachment to him.

And what seems like a simple slice of life soon turns into one of the most over-the-top stories you’ll ever witness.

FLCL and Kill la Kill share one important factor: the courage to experiment. And that’s why despite their different plots and settings, we are confident that you will love both.

2. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Gurren Lagann

We want to caution you now that the first two positions on this list will be held by what we consider to be the two absolute masterpieces of Studio Trigger, which most of the public also regards as such.

The first of these masterpieces is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a little gem that you absolutely cannot miss.

The story follows Simon and Kamina, who are tired of living underground and yearn to see the sky. One day, while digging underground, they discover the head of a mecha called Lagann.

After activating the mecha, they surface and take control of its body, leading them into a war against mysterious enemies.

It’s true, Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill have nothing in common in terms of plot, setting, or other aspects.

But by now you’ve probably realized that if you enjoyed Kill la Kill, it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on all of Studio Trigger’s major works, right?

1. Promare

Promare

You don’t need us to tell you that Promare is at the top of this list, as it’s arguably Studio Trigger’s greatest achievement yet, with animation, soundtrack, and pacing bordering on perfection.

In the movie’s fictional universe, the emergence of the Burnish, a race of fiery beings resulting from a mutation in human DNA, caused half of planet Earth to be engulfed in flames.

Now, 30 years later, a terrorist group known as Mad Burnish has resumed its campaign of destruction.

It’s up to Galo Thymos, a new member of Burning Rescue, the anti-Burnish team, to battle Lio Fotia, the leader of Mad Burnish, and save the planet.

We’re not exaggerating when we say that this movie features some of the best animation ever created in the history of the medium. Do we need to say more?

  1. It’s probably well-documented by now how big of deal One Punch Man’s two mangas are but I’ll gush about them either way. I started my read around 2014. The webcomic is still ahead of the manga but both got plenty of content, especially compared to 9 years ago where translations were scarce.
